Chan Tar Gyi Pagoda, Mogok

The huge Chan Tar Gyi Pagoda sits on a hill overlooking Mogok town and lake.

Mogok has a diverse population with many different ethnic groups living together. Much of this diversity is a remnant of the British colonial days. This has led to a wide variety of religious beliefs including Buddhism, Hinduism, Islam & Christianity. There are Buddhist, Hindu, & Sikh temples, churches & mosques all over Mogok. There are also small Buddhist pagodas which dot the horizon all over the region. If there is a peak on a mountain or hill you will find a small pagoda there .Buddhism is the prevalent religion in Mogok as it is throughout Burma. Traditional Theravada Buddhism is practiced by 89% of the population. This prevalence is also reflected in Mogok where large Buddhist temples dominate the skyline. Many of these temples contain offerings of gems donated by the people of Mogok to make merit.
