Basaltic type sapphires can originate from a variety of sources including Australia, Thailand, Cambodia, China, Vietnam, Laos, Nigeria, Ethiopia, Rwanda, Cameroon and northern Madagascar.

It can sometimes not be possible to determine or prove the exact source of basaltic sapphires as they can display identical features. If we have a basaltic type sapphire in which the origin cannot be supported with evidence, we will describe the origin as 'Basaltic'.
