Blue zircons are routinely heated to produce the blue colouring in these gems. The heated colouring is generally permeant, although it can fade in sunlight. The colour can be restored by keeping the gem in the dark. Zircons show strong birefringence, causing a doubling effect on inclusions and facet junctions. This can give the stone a hazy appearance.
